Connecticut Secretary of the State Denise Merrill on the SCOTUS Decision in the Brnovitch Voting Rights Act Case

“This decision underscores the importance of states like Connecticut continuing their commitment to the twin principles of expanding the franchise and allowing every eligible voter to cast their ballots without unnecessary obstacles or interference. I am proud that Connecticut has led the way in ensuring that every eligible citizen can easily register, and every registered voter can conveniently vote.

“An increasingly activist Supreme Court has once again upheld laws designed to make it more difficult for voters, particularly minority voters, to cast their ballots and make their voices heard. Voters should choose their elected officials; elected officials, with the help of compliant judges, should not be allowed to choose their voters.

“This Court, in abandoning any pretense of respecting original intent and ignoring the broad language of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, passed in an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote, unanimously in the United States Senate, has inserted themselves in lawmaking and rewritten the VRA to offer less protection against discrimination for voters.”
