ELECTION RESULTS TO BE AUDITED OF SELECTED POLLING LOCATIONS
A count of ballots from five percent of all polling places that use optical scanners to be matched against machine totals, which will affirm the integrity of the vote
HARTFORD – Secretary of the State Denise Merrill randomly selected voting precincts to have primary results audited following the September 12 municipal primary election. Five percent of the polling places that use optical scan machines are subject to the audit, as prescribed by Connecticut General Statutes 9-320f. Those counts will be matched against vote totals from optical scan machines.
Secretary Merrill said, “Protecting the integrity of our elections is my most important role, and Connecticut voters can be proud that we have some of the most stringent audit laws in the country. Between making it easier for Connecticut citizens to register and vote, an increased focus on cybersecurity, and our scrupulous audit process, the rights of the voter are our highest priority.”
There were 151 polling places that used optical scan machines on September 12 so the Secretary of the State chose 8 primary and 4 alternate locations. The results of audits will be analyzed by the University of Connecticut, the Secretary of the State’s Office, and the State Elections Enforcement Commission, and then be made available to the public.
Connecticut boasts one of the strictest audit statutes in the country and was the first state in New England to require a comprehensive audit of primary results.
