Statement on DHS Field Operations Injunction
(Hartford, Connecticut) — The Office of the Secretary of the State was pleased to see the federal court judgement on Wednesday that blocked the Department of Homeland Security from conducting election-related field operations that could target U.S. citizens in nine states, including Connecticut.
“Protecting the integrity of our elections means protecting the rights of eligible voters, too,” said Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas. “Think about what it would feel like to have federal agents show up at your door, based on unreliable data, questioning whether you're eligible to vote, even though you're an American citizen. And imagine that happening just days before an election.
“We have laws and established procedures in Connecticut for investigating potential election violations. Those investigations should be based on facts, conducted responsibly, and carried out without discouraging American citizens from exercising their constitutional right to vote.
“No eligible, lawful voter should have to fear a knock on the door from federal agents simply because they registered to vote or participated in an election."
