Deadline Approaching: Connecticut Voters Who Want to Change Parties and Vote in 2025 Primaries Must Change Their Affiliation by June 9
(Hartford, Connecticut) –The Office of the Secretary of the State reminds voters that Monday, June 9, is the deadline to change party affiliation in order to vote in a September primary ahead of Connecticut’s 2025 municipal elections.
Primaries will take place on Tuesday, September 9, in towns where more than one individual from the same political party qualifies as a candidate for mayor, first selectman, city council, board of education, or other local race.
Under Connecticut law, voters who belong to a political party must wait three months after changing their party affiliation before they can vote in their new party’s primary. This does not apply to unaffiliated voters, who can enroll in a party and gain voting rights in that party immediately, as long as they have been unaffiliated for at least three months.
In every town that has a primary, the September 9 election will be preceded by six days of early voting from September 2-7. Monday, September 1, is exempt from the early voting window because it is a state holiday.
In Connecticut, only registered members of a political party can vote in that party’s primary. Voters who want to participate in a primary different from the party they belong to now must update their party affiliation by June 9.
Party affiliation changes can be made online at MyVote.CT.gov/register, by mail, or in person at your local registrar of voters' office.
For more information on registering, party affiliation, or upcoming elections, visit SOTS.CT.gov or call the Secretary of the State’s Election Division at 860-509-6100.
