Celebrate National Voter Registration Day by Making a Voting Plan

(Hartford, Connecticut) – Before residents can have a voice in their towns, they need to be ready to vote. With National Voter Registration Day coming up on Tuesday, September 16, Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas is encouraging all Connecticut residents to take a moment this week to make sure they are ready to cast a ballot this fall.

This November 4, Connecticut voters will cast their ballots in municipal elections to select local leaders who will guide their towns and shape the future of their communities.

“Local elections are where democracy meets everyday life,” said Secretary Thomas. “The people you elect decide how schools operate, which roads get fixed, where homes and businesses are built, and how fire, police, and libraries serve the community. These choices may not make the evening news, but they touch our families and our neighborhoods in very real ways. Voting in local elections gives you a real say in your community.”

Residents can visit MyVote.CT.gov to register to vote or confirm that their registration is current. The website provides a simple way to check voter status, update addresses, or make any necessary changes before Election Day.

Voter registration deadlines for the 2025 municipal election:

By mail: Voter registration applications sent by mail to local town registrars should be postmarked no later than October 17.
In person: Deliver in person or complete your voter registration application at your town registrar’s office by October 17.
Early voting: Voters can register and cast their ballot at early voting locations during the early voting period from October 20 through November 2. Visit MyVote.CT.gov for details on hours and polling locations.
Election Day: Voters can register and cast their ballot at the designated location in their town on November 4.

Secretary Thomas encouraged residents not just to register, but also to help spread the word on National Voter Registration Day. A few simple, civic-minded actions include:

1. Check your own registration at MyVote.CT.gov to be sure your information is up to date.
2. Reach out to a friend or family member with a reminder to register or confirm their status.
3. Bring a young person who has just turned 18 through the registration process.
4. Share a reminder on social media so neighbors and community members know how simple it is to register.
5. Make a voting plan and encourage others to do the same—decide when and where you will vote and stick to it.
