Relinking deleted pages, media items, or folders

When you delete a page, folder, image, or document file in Sitecore, any hyperlinks pointing to that item will break. To address this, Sitecore prompts you with the Broken Links dialog box, where you can choose how to handle the broken links. These are your options

When deleting an item, you’ll be prompted to choose one of the following actions:

Remove Links

Removes all hyperlink or image tags pointing to the deleted item.

  1. In the Broken Links dialog box, select Remove links, then click Continue.
    • The message will display the number of links to the item you're deleting.
    • The linked text remains on the page, but the hyperlink or image reference is removed.

  2. Select Continue.
  3. Save Save icon your changes.
  4. Publish Publish icon the parent folder that contained the deleted item(s).

⚠️ Important: Any pages that contained or linked to the deleted item must also be republished for the changes to take effect.

 

Link to Another Item

Replaces all links to the deleted item with a new item of your choice.

  1. Select the Link to another item option, then the Continue button to permanently change every link to the item.
  2. Use the content tree to locate and select the new item to link to.

  3. Select Relink to replace the item.
  4. Save Save icon your changes.
  5. Publish Publish icon the parent folder that contained the deleted item(s).

💡 Note: If you are replacing the deleted item with a new one, make sure to add the new item to Sitecore first.

 

Leave Links

Leaves all broken links or image references unchanged.

  1. Select the Leave links option, then the Continue button to leave every link to the item.
    • A message will display with the number of links that will remain broken.
    • The text and links will remain on the page but will no longer work.

  2. Save Save icon your changes.
  3. Publish Publish icon the parent folder that contained the deleted item(s).

 

 

Edit Links Individually

Allows you to view and update each broken link one by one.

  1. Click Edit Links to open the list of affected pages.

    2. For each listed page, choose one of the following:

    • Edit - Opens the page in the Content Editor for manual editing.

    • Remove Link: Deletes the hyperlink or image reference, leaving the text in place.

      ⚠️ Warning: This action cannot be undone, and no confirmation message appears. 

    • Removed Link Message

    • Link to Other Item: Opens the Relink dialog. Browse and select a new item, then click Relink.

    3. Save Save icon your changes.

 4. Publish Publish icon the parent folder that contained the deleted item(s).
