Instruction - Mastery-Based Learning

Overview

There are many similarities between traditional classroom instruction and instruction in a mastery-based learning classroom.  In both, there will be a need for direct instruction at times.  Both approaches depend on defining the desired results.  However, there are also differences.

The following are key elements of mastery-based learning approaches:

  • Students advance upon mastery.
  • Competencies include explicit, measurable, transferable learning objectives that empower students.
  • Assessment is meaningful and a positive learning experience for students.
  • Students receive rapid, differentiated support based on their individualized learning needs.
  • Learning outcomes emphasize competencies that include application and creation of knowledge along with the development of important skills and dispositions.

These elements lead to changes in unit design and assessment among other areas of instruction.
