
One issue of concern to the Commission relates to the lack of funding for fire service training. While grant programs currently exist for local fire departments including the FIRE Act and the Department of Justice’s WMD Equipment grant program there has been no funding earmarked for training. With departments accessing new equipment and upgrading their training to address new threats, demands on the Academy continue to increase. During Sen. Dodd’s visit he had an opportunity to tour the Academy facilities including the newly dedicated Fallen Firefighters Memorial. He was able to witness first hand both a Recruit Firefighter and Fire Officer III training program in progress. He took time to address students in both classes and respond to questions. His visit concluded with a private meeting with members of the Commission and Academy staff.
