Ellen Shuman

D. Ellen Shuman has worked in the field of investment management for almost 40 years, primarily serving institutions of higher education and philanthropy. She has expertise in investment management, best governance practices, and has championed the careers of many women leaders in the field of institutional investing. Ms. Shuman spent her early career at the Yale University Investments Office (1986-1998) as Director of Investments, reporting to Chief Investment Officer David Swensen. From 1999 to 2011 she served as the Chief Investment Officer of Carnegie Corporation of New York, a private foundation. In 2013 Ms. Shuman co-Founded Edgehill Endowment Partners, an Outsourced Chief Investment Office (OCIO) which invested the entire endowments of endowed, mission-based institutions. In early 2020 she transitioned to a strategic role at Edgehill, becoming Partner Emerita.In May 2020, she embraced public service through her appointment by Governor Lamont as the Chair of the State of Connecticut’s Investment Advisory Council (IAC). As of September 2024 she stepped down as the Chair and continues to serve as a Council member under the leadership of Chair Phil Zecher. Her commitment to non-profit institutions is exemplified by her role as a Trustee at her alma mater, Bowdoin College, for 21 years (1992-2013), and current service on the board and investment committee of The Juilliard School, and a member of the investment committees of the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Ms. Shuman is a board member of JBG Smith (NYSE: JBGS), a REIT based in Washington, D.C. JBGS was selected by Amazon as its HQ2 development partner in 2019.She received the Institutional Investor Magazine Lifetime Achievement Award for Foundations in 2014. In 2019 she was recognized by Women Inc in 2019 as one of the 100 Most Influential Board Members. Ms. Shuman received a B.A., magna cum laude, from Bowdoin College and an MPPM (MBA) from the Yale School of Management.
