(HARTFORD, CT) - Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz released the following statement after mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine claimed the lives of at least 18 individuals.

“The news coming out of Maine is devastating. As many as 18 lives have been lost and at least 13 injured, with numbers expected to rise. This is enough – we are all so tired of waking up and learning about yet another incident of gun violence.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, this is the 565th mass shooting this year. This is an epidemic and a clear call to action. Connecticut has led the way in adopting strong and comprehensive gun safety legislation – but, it’s time that other states and our federal government join us to truly put an end to this crisis.

I want to thank the first responders that have been working tirelessly to respond to this tragedy and protect their communities. My heart goes out to the victims and to their loved ones. I continue to keep each one of them in my thoughts and prayers.”
