Lt. Governor Bysiewicz Launches 2020 Census Jobs Recruitment Campaign
U.S. Census Bureau sets recruitment goal of 28,000 applicants statewide
(HARTFORD, CT) – Today, Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, joined by the U.S. Census Bureau, Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Commissioner Sibongile Magubane, Deputy Commissioner Tony Guerrera, and Representatives Pat Wilson Pheanious, Hilda Santiago and Toni Walker, launched a statewide 2020 Census Jobs Recruitment Campaign at the DMV Main Office in Wethersfield.
As part of National Recruitment Day, the U.S. Census Bureau is hosting recruitment events at various Connecticut DMV locations in “hard-to-count” areas with the goal of recruiting 28,000 applicants for thousands of temporary positions starting next spring. Participating branches include Danbury, Bridgeport, Norwalk, Old Saybrook, Norwich, and Waterbury. The events feature information on available jobs, requirements, hourly pay, which is $21-$25 in Connecticut, and opportunities to speak with census recruiters.
“Applying to work part-time for the 2020 Census is a great way to earn extra income and also to contribute to your own community.” Lt. Governor Bysiewics said. “An accurate census count is critical for Connecticut as it is the foundation to determine nearly $11 billion in federal funding for programs and projects that people across our state depend on. Achieving a full count is massive undertaking and comes with many challenges, but I am confident that if we get the right people working for the census and knocking on those doors next spring, we can ensure that no one is left out.”
“While the census is a national event, in order to be successful, it must be conducted at the local level. This starts with hiring people to work in their own communities,” said Jeff Behler, Regional Director, New York Region Census Center. “We appreciate all the work being done by the Lt. Governor in spreading our important message, and look forward to working with the CT DMV to ensure that together we provide easy and ample opportunities for local community members to apply to Census jobs.”

“It is so important that people be counted during the 2020 Census. It is a constitutional mandate that occurs only once every 10 years, and will determine the federal dollars our communities receive. It is the duty of every human being who resides in Connecticut to be part of the count,” said Rep. Wilson Pheanious, who serves as Co-Chair of the Connecticut Complete Count Committee. “That mandate has become an opportunity, as over 28,000 good-paying positions in our state are open to anyone who is comfortable talking to their neighbors, reading a map, and documenting detailed information. Temporary, part-time Census Bureau employment will not affect public assistance benefits. Census data is protected information is only used for statistical purposed and may not be used by the federal agencies or any other organizations.”
Thousands of Workers Needed
Next spring, the Census Bureau will launch the largest 2020 Census field operation, known as Nonresponse Follow-up, Census Takers will knock on doors to follow up with households who have not responded to the census questionnaire. Applicants can qualify for both field and office positions. The office positions, which are more limited, will be located in area census offices. The role of these offices is to recruit, select, hire, train, manage, and pay all office and field staff who work within the designated boundaries of the geographic territory assigned to the office. The Census Bureau is in the process of opening 248 offices nationwide, including three in Connecticut, to support the 2020 Census. As these offices become ready for business, they are listed at 2020census.gov/jobs/pay-and-locations.
Easy to Apply
Applying for one of these jobs is simple. Just visit 2020census.gov/jobs or call 855-JOB-2020 and select option 3 for more information. Pay rates for field and clerical jobs can be found at 2020census.gov/jobs/pay-and-locations.
Those who are being considered for a position will receive a telephone interview. If offered a job, they will receive instructions on next steps via email. Applicants will need to complete paperwork online and make an appointment to get fingerprinted for the background check. Once they are offered the job, there will be a period of time before their start date to allow time for the background clearance process. Most applications will remain active throughout the 2020 Census and may be considered as positions become available.
