Gov. Malloy Urges Towns and Cities to Register for Program That Will Significantly Improve Accuracy of the Upcoming Census

Accurate Census Data is Critical for Initiatives in Every Neighborhood Across the State

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy is urging municipalities across Connecticut to register for the U.S. Census Bureau’s Local Update of Census Address (LUCA) Program – an initiative created by the bureau as an opportunity for state and local governments to provide an updated and complete list of addresses in their communities in preparation for the federal government’s upcoming census in 2020.

Governor Malloy has registered the State of Connecticut to participate in the program but he is stressing that the help of towns and cities is critical to improve the accuracy of these efforts.

“The census is critical for state and local governments because the data collected will determine for the next decade how federal funding will be distributed for so many important initiatives in every neighborhood across the state, including for education, Medicaid and other health programs, highways, housing, law enforcement, and so much more,” Governor Malloy said. “That is why we are urging every town and city to partner with us by registering for this program in order to help improve the accuracy of each town’s address list. The importance of local governments taking part in this effort cannot be understated, and we thank all of those who are participating.”

Municipalities who want to get involved must register with the U.S. Census Bureau by December 15, 2017.

Information on the initiative and Connecticut’s efforts to participate, including an up-to-date list of Connecticut municipalities that have registered so far, can be found on Governor Malloy’s website by visiting http://portal.ct.gov/census.
