GOV. MALLOY: STATE GAINS FEDERAL NOD TO DISTRIBUTE $10.5 MILLION IN SOCIAL SERVICES AID RESULTING FROM STORM SANDY
(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that his administration has received federal approval to distribute over $10.5 million in new social services disaster relief funding to assist Connecticut residents and organizations impacted by Storm Sandy.
"Once again, I would like to thank the Obama Administration and our Congressional delegation for their cooperation in Connecticut's ongoing disaster recovery efforts," Governor Malloy said. "Unmet needs from Storm Sandy that qualify for social services funding are not necessarily the most visible, but they impact many of our residents and human service organizations in ways that merit our special attention."
Funds under the Social Services Block Grant (SSBG) Supplemental Funds are intended to address a range of protective, case management, housing and related service needs for individuals, families and organizations affected by Storm Sandy.
Connecticut was awarded $10,569,192 in SSBG Supplemental Funds by the Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families based on an allocation involving the number of people registering for individual assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Developed by the state Department of Social Services (DSS) for implementation through September 2015, the plan includes:
  • Case management services ($4,861,829);
  • Counseling services ($1,162,611);
  • Housing services ($739,843);
  • Information and referral ($528,460);
  • Protective services for adults ($528,460);
  • Protective services for children ($1,056,919);
  • Renovation, repairs and operating costs sustained by child care, health care or other social services organizations ($739,843); and
  • Administrative services ($951,227).
"This SSBG funding is especially welcome to support our continuing recovery after Storm Sandy," DSS Commissioner Roderick L. Bremby said. "The funding will help individuals and families who have experienced a range of problems and issues relating to the disaster. It will also go toward compensating organizations and agencies which have sustained uncovered costs and expenses related to serving residents and paying for repairs and renovations."
