Connecticut Department of Revenue Services Warns Taxpayers to Be Aware of Scammers Offering Tax Assistance
(Hartford, CT) – The Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (DRS) is warning the public of a taxpayer assistance imposter scam.
Scammers are using unsolicited phone calls to notify taxpayers they may qualify for reductions and/or settlements in back taxes. Often, the callback number does not contain a Connecticut area code, and/or they are calling from an office that does not exist within DRS.
“Scammers are unfortunately becoming more sophisticated in their approach,” said DRS Commissioner Mark Boughton. “I remind taxpayers to remain vigilant and to contact us if they have any questions or want to report an attempted scam.”
As a friendly reminder:
- DRS will never contact you via text message or social media to discuss personal tax information.
- Do not disclose any personal tax information over the phone.
- If you have any questions about a call you receive, contact DRS.
- Protect your personal tax information on all your devices by installing anti-virus software and/or encryption. Regularly update your software to protect against security vulnerabilities.
Anyone who has information regarding a tax-related scam is urged to contact DRS by completing a referral form on the agency’s website.
