Commissioner Juthani's Memorial Day message to DPH staff

5/24/2024

Dear Colleagues,

For many of us, Memorial Day weekend serves as the unofficial start of summer. As you spend some well-deserved down-time with family and friends, please take a moment to remember the countless number of brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in the service of our country and its citizens.

Memorial Day represents a time when we pay tribute to all the service members throughout history who gave their lives fighting for our country and its ideals of safety, liberty, and democracy for all. We also use this time to recognize the many families who have lost their loved ones in service to the United States.

The origins of Memorial Day date back to the Civil War when flowers and flags were placed on the graves of soldiers who died. Late May was chosen as the date for the holiday because flowers would be in full bloom and used to honor those who had died for their country. Today, whether through parades, gatherings, or solemn services, Memorial Day gives all of us the opportunity to celebrate our great country while keeping alive the memory of those soldiers who fought and died to protect it.

Thank you for your dedication to the health and wellness of the residents of Connecticut. I wish you and your family a happy and safe Memorial Day.

Sincerely,

Commissioner Juthani
