For Immediate Release

HARTFORD, (April 24, 2009) – The Metropolitan District (MDC) announces that the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) is requesting that MDC customers in the towns of Bloomfield, Windsor, Hartford, West Hartford, and parts of East Granby and Windsor Locks, continue to boil their drinking water for one minute as a precautionary measure through the weekend while rigorous testing continues throughout the system.

All possible actions are being taken and additional avenues are being explored to lift the boil water notice as soon as possible. Among these actions is an increase in the amount of chlorine utilized in the water treatment process. While this increase is well below (less than one-half) the maximum acceptable limit established by the DPH, customers may notice a slight chlorine taste or odor in the tap water.

The boil water advisory does not apply to customers in East Hartford, Glastonbury, Portland, South Windsor, Rocky Hill, Newington, Farmington/Unionville, and Wethersfield. These areas are supplied by a separate water treatment facility and thus are not affected.

Updated information can be found on the District’s website www.themdc.com. Customers who have questions may contact the Metropolitan District at 278-7850 extension 3600. Additional information is also available at DPH’s website: http://www.ct.gov/dph/site/default.asp or by phone at 509-8000.

The MDC is a nonprofit municipal corporation chartered by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1929. The MDC provides water, sewer and household hazardous waste collection services to its member municipalities: Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, Newington, Rocky Hill, West Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor.
