CTDOT Reminds Public to Prioritize Safety on First Day of Spring

As the state of Connecticut welcomes the arrival of spring, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) urges all pedestrians and motorists to prioritize safety on the roads and walkways.

With the weather improving and daylight lasting longer, more individuals are taking to the streets for walks, runs, and other outdoor activities. The CTDOT acknowledges the benefits of outdoor exercise and recreation but emphasizes the importance of caution and awareness for both pedestrians and drivers.

"It’s wonderful seeing our residents enjoying the weather and staying active, but safety must always remain a top priority," said Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto. "Whether you're walking, biking, or driving, it's crucial to be mindful and considerate of each other to prevent crashes and ensure everyone stays safe."

Pedestrians have the right of way under many conditions, especially at marked crosswalks. Drivers must operate their vehicles safely at all times, adhering to speed limits and yielding to pedestrians when necessary.

The CTDOT offers the following safety reminders and responsibilities for both drivers and pedestrians:

Driver Reminders:

  • Maintain a speed limit of 15 mph in parking lots and access roads.
  • Be respectful of pedestrians and other motorists.
  • Slow down and yield to pedestrians when approaching a group of walkers.
  • Always expect the unexpected and watch for pedestrians.
  • Stop at crosswalks when pedestrians are present.
  • Be vigilant for distracted pedestrians.
  • Put away distractions, follow the speed limit, and always drive sober.

Pedestrian Reminders:

  • Always walk facing traffic and watch for distracted drivers.
  • Walk in a single vertical line when in a group of two or more people.
  • Use crosswalks wherever possible.
  • Keep headphone volume to a minimum, minimize distractions and remain aware of surroundings.

"No matter how we travel, we all share the roads and walkways of Connecticut," added Eucalitto. "By practicing caution, awareness, and mutual respect, we can ensure that everyone reaches their destination safely."
