CTDOT is Developing Plans to Excavate and Stabilize an Existing Rock Slope on U.S. Route 1 Southbound in East Haven

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans to excavate and stabilize an existing rock slope on U.S. Route 1 southbound in East Haven.

The purpose of this project is to improve the long-term stability of the rock slope and construct a suitable roadside catchment area. This project is needed because the existing rock slope has had several small failures, one of which resulted in debris obstructing the U.S. Route 1 southbound travel lane. This project involves approximately 570 feet of rock excavation to shift the toe of slope 20 feet off the edge of roadway.

The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in August 2026, with construction anticipated to start in spring 2027, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits.  This project will be undertaken with eighty percent (80%) Federal funds and twenty percent (20%) State funds.

It’s important to CTDOT to ensure the public’s feedback and thoughts are heard and included.

If anyone has any questions or comments on this project, contact Mr. Scott Bushee, P.E., Principal Engineer, at (860) 594-2079 or by email at scott.bushee@ct.gov.  Please refer to State Project No. 0043-0133.
