Public Invited to Meeting Regarding the Realignment of Route 8 Southbound Exit 34 Off-Ramp at Watertown Avenue and Robbins Street in Waterbury

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is holding a conceptual public information meeting concerning the realignment of Route 8 Southbound Exit 34 Off-Ramp at Watertown Avenue and Robbins Street in Waterbury.

The meeting will also serve as a scoping meeting under the purview of the Connecticut Environmental Policy Act (CEPA). A notice of scoping for the project has been published in the latest issue of the Connecticut State Council on Environmental Quality’s Environmental Monitor which can be found at https://portal.ct.gov/CEQ/Environmental-Monitor/Environmental-Monitor/Environmental-Monitor---Current-Issue#Scoping.

The meeting will take place in person on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Chase Park House, 150 Sunnyside Avenue, Waterbury, CT 06708. An informal open house will be held from 6:00-6:30 p.m. A presentation at 6:30 p.m. will cover details of the project and the CEPA purpose and process. The meeting will then open to the members of the public for comments and questions.

“This project has been identified as an early action project under the New Mix Study, aimed at addressing the long-term needs of the I-84 and Route 8 Mixmaster interchange,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Project Manager Jon Dean.We encourage community members in the greater Waterbury region to share their comments and feedback with the CTDOT project team to consider during the design process.”

The purpose of the project is to improve safety and traffic operations on West Main Street and Route 8 Southbound in the vicinity of Exits 34 and 35. The project proposes to eliminate the dual approach of Watertown Avenue Southbound and the Route 8 Southbound Exit 34 Off-Ramp at West Main Street by relocating the off-ramp north to the intersection of Watertown Avenue and Robbins Street, where a new traffic signal will be installed. Improved traffic signals and lane configurations will also be provided at the intersection of Watertown Avenue, Riverside Street, and West Main Street. The project also proposes to provide additional signage, new pedestrian curb ramps, pedestrian signalization, and painted crosswalks. Additional information about the project can be found at https://www.newmixwaterbury.com/public-involvement/#public-meetings

The purpose of this conceptual public information and CEPA scoping meeting is to provide an overview of what the project intends to accomplish, including the need, benefits, environmental impacts, and timeline, to obtain public input and answer questions from the public that will help shape the project.

The official comment period for consideration under CEPA scoping will close on Thursday, November 30, 2023. Throughout the comment period, the public can provide comments using any of the following methods:
