Upgrades to Light Fixtures and Roadway Lighting in Eastern CT

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) Office of Engineering is developing plans for the following work:

  • Replacement of existing decorative post top light fixtures and electric service cabinet with new LED decorative post top fixtures and electric service cabinet on the pedestrian walkway along Interstate 95 southbound adjacent to the south end of the Baldwin Bridge in Old Saybrook.
  • Replacement of existing roadway lighting systems on Interstate 95 in New London, Route 2 and Route 78 in Stonington, Route 1 and Route 154 in Old Saybrook, Route 2 in Marlborough, Route 6 in Columbia, Coventry, Mansfield and Windham, and Route 12 and Route 2 in Norwich.

Replacement of the existing roadway lighting systems involves replacing the existing light poles, light pole foundations, light fixtures, underground circuitry and electric service cabinets with new light poles, light pole foundations, LED type light fixtures, underground circuitry, and electric service cabinets.

The purpose of this project is to replace existing light fixtures and roadway lighting systems that have reached the end of their useful life in order to improve the operation and reduce the maintenance requirements of the roadway lighting systems.

It is CTDOT policy to keep the public informed when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share their concerns with CTDOT to assist in the project's development.

The present schedule indicates that final design plans will be available in March 2024. The project will be undertaken with 80 percent (80%) federal and 20 percent (20%) state funds.
