CTDOT Developing Plans to Replace Signs and Renumber Exits Along Route 6 and I-384

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans to replace signs and sign supports along U.S. Route 6 (freeway section only – Columbia to Windham), the entire length of Interstate 384, and the associated on-ramps and off-ramps.

The new signs and sign supports will be installed in accordance with the latest Federal and State standards and guidelines. The types of signs that will be replaced include but are not limited to, large overhead and side-mounted guide signs and on-ramp entrance signs. Additionally, to meet Federal standards, exit numbers on I-384 are required to be revised from the existing sequential numbering to mileage-based numbering. Mileage-based exit numbers will be added to U.S. Route 6 signs.

The existing signs have exceeded their useful service life and need replacement. The project’s scope involves replacing only the signs that have exceeded their useful service life, have less than adequate retroreflectivity, have evidence of damage, or are no longer in compliance with Federal and State standards and guidelines. This project excludes signs that have been recently replaced or are scheduled to be replaced by other various construction projects.

“Replacing the signs improves safety for drivers by ensuring they are not damaged and will be easier to see at night,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Project Manager Barry Schilling. “By renumbering the exits to meet Federal guidelines, drivers will be able to determine distances between exits easily, and first responders will know exactly where to go in an emergency.”

Please refer to the list below for the proposed exit numbers for U.S. Route 6 and I-384.
