Public Invited to Meeting Regarding the Replacement of Bridge No. 06926 Carrying Mountain Road over Spaulding Brook in Norfolk

CTDOT holding a virtual meeting on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at 7:00 p.m.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will conduct a virtual public information meeting concerning the replacement of the bridge carrying Mountain Road over Spaulding Brook in Norfolk on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at 7 p.m.

The meeting provides the public and local community the opportunity to offer comments or ask questions regarding the proposed project. A question and answer session will immediately follow the presentation, which will be recorded. For instructions on accessing the meeting and ways to provide comments and ask questions, please visit https://portal.ct.gov/DOTNorfolk97-98.

The purpose of the project is to address structural deficiencies associated with the poor condition of the existing bridge, which were identified in recent inspections. The existing 1950s three-cell steel culvert that carries Mountain Road over Spaulding Brook will be replaced with a new single span bridge.

Traffic will be detoured during construction through a short 1.4-mile detour around the bridge. There are right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed improvements.

Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2026 based on the availability of funding, acquisition of rights of way, and approval of permit(s). The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $1.86 million. This project is anticipated to be undertaken with 80% federal funds and 20% state funds.

“This project will replace the nearly 70-year-old culvert with a new, modern structure, which will improve safety and reliability for motorists, said Connecticut Department of Transportation Project Manager Marc Byrnes. “We hope the public attends this meeting live or watches the recording to learn more about the project, ask questions, and share feedback with the CTDOT project team.”
