Public Invited to Meeting Regarding the Removal of the Exit 21 Off-Ramp on I-84 Eastbound in Waterbury

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will conduct a public information meeting concerning the removal of Exit 21 on I-84 Eastbound in Waterbury on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Maloney Magnet School, 233 South Elm Street, Waterbury. The meeting will also be broadcast live on Waterbury-area Comcast channels 13 (Community Access) and 96 (Government Access).

An informal open house will be held from 6-6:30 p.m. to provide time for the public to speak one-on-one with the CTDOT project team. The open house will be followed by a presentation providing an overview of the project’s purpose, need, schedule, and preliminary design.

This early action project was identified under the New Mix Planning and Environmental Linkages Study, which is CTDOT’s program for the planning and implementation of a series of projects aimed at addressing the long-term needs of the Interstate 84 and Route 8 Interchange in Waterbury, commonly referred to as the Mixmaster.

The project aims to improve safety, traffic flow, and air quality on I-84 Eastbound in the vicinity of Exits 19 through 22. Other project goals include enhancing the local roadway network by improving traffic operations and urban design for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The project proposes to remove the Exit 21 off-ramp from I-84 Eastbound and extend the auxiliary lane to allow additional merge and diverge distance for drivers entering and exiting I-84 Eastbound near Exit 22. Additional information about the project can be found at bit.ly/Exit21Factsheet.

Spanish translation will be provided at this meeting. American Sign Language interpretation and translation in Albanian, Arabic, French Creole, or Portuguese can be provided for the meeting upon request. Translation requests should be made at least five business days prior to the meeting by calling CTDOT at (860) 594-2109. Language assistance is provided at no cost to the public, and efforts will be made to respond to timely requests for assistance.
