Game Plan for Super Bowl 57: Don’t Drink and Drive

Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), U.S. Department of Transportation, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are warning everyone about the dangers of drunk and distracted driving as we plan for Super Bowl Sunday. The Big Game is this Sunday, February 12, 2023, and should be enjoyed responsibly and safely.

“Events, holidays, and other landmark days can cause a significant uptick in drinking, meaning a heightened risk of crashes and deaths on our roadways,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto. “If you plan to drink, there is no excuse not to plan a sober ride home for you and those you care about. Between public transportation, taxis, ride sharing apps, and the support of friends and family, we are counting on every single Connecticut resident to be a part of the solution on Sunday – and for the long term.”

According to the NHTSA, 11,654 people were killed nationally in motor vehicle crashes in 2020 that involved an alcohol-impaired driver. In Connecticut, there were 118 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities in 2020.

On average, more than 10,000 people were killed each year from 2016 to 2020 nationally, and in Connecticut, approximately 115 people were killed each year during the same time period.

Nationally, one person was killed in a drunk driving crash every 45 minutes in 2020. In Connecticut, someone was killed every three days due to alcohol-impaired driving.

“If you are having people over to watch the game, and you’re the kind of host who won’t let someone at risk of driving impaired leave without a safe way home – thank you. If you are the designated driver – thank you. We need more people to take these roles seriously in order to prevent crashes, serious injuries, and deaths,” added Eucalitto.

Have your game plan ready before kickoff to get home safely and encourage your friends and loved ones to do the same. If you are hosting a Super Bowl party, be sure all your guests have a sober ride home. Ask all your guests to designate their sober drivers in advance.

On Super Bowl Sunday and every day, be a team player and remember: Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.
