The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has initiated projects to install Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) at 87 municipally selected locations on municipally-owned and maintained roads, which will enhance pedestrian safety. RRFBs are bright, flashing lights that are installed underneath the crossing sign and are activated through the crossing push button.
These RRFB projects involve upgrading the existing crossing infrastructure to the latest standards. Items such as pedestals, accessible pedestrian signal (APS) push buttons, flashers, signage, and pavement markings will be upgraded. The projects also include constructing and reconstructing curb ramps, blended transitions, sidewalk extensions, landing areas, detectable warning surfaces, and realigning skewed crosswalk pavement markings to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The RRFBs will be solar powered unless the device cannot be placed due to overhead utility conflicts, the solar panels would be in a location that receives no direct sunlight, or the municipality requests the service to be hardwired.
“RRFBs help enhance pedestrians’ visibility at or in crosswalks and can lead to up to a 47 percent reduction in pedestrian crashes,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Project Manager Jonathan Corilla. “Installing this technology on municipal roads is part of our larger strategy to improve safety throughout the state.”
It’s important to CTDOT to ensure the public’s feedback and thoughts are heard and included. If anyone has any questions or comments on these projects, contact Jonathan J. Corilla, Project Manager, at (860) 594-2755 or Jonathan.Corilla@ct.gov. Please reference the appropriate state project number.
