CTDOT Office of Highway Safety Reminds Motorists to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over this Labor Day Weekend

NEWINGTON, CT – As we approach this Labor Day holiday weekend, the Connecticut Department of Transportation Office of Highway Safety is reminding residents that no matter how you plan to celebrate the end of the summer season this year, make sure you plan it safely.

Connecticut law enforcement will participate in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over impaired driving awareness campaign throughout the holiday weekend. They will be patrolling for impaired drivers to keep our roads safe. And, if you are driving under the influence, you will be pulled over.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 11,654 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2020 involving an alcohol-impaired driver – a 14 percent increase from 2019.

“Last year, across the country, a drunk-driving crash killed someone every 45 minutes,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Joe Giulietti. “Driving while impaired is illegal, and it takes lives. We urge all Connecticut motorists to use caution this Labor Day weekend and make plans for a sober ride.”

The Connecticut Department of Transportation recommends these safe alternatives to drinking and driving:

  • Remember that it is never okay to drink and drive. Even if you’ve had only one alcoholic beverage, designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride service to get home safely.
  • Use a rideshare program or public transit if available.
  • Contact local law enforcement if you see a drunk driver on the road.
  • Do you have a friend who is about to drink and drive? Take the keys away and arrange to get your friend home safely.
