CTDOT Cuts Ribbon on Ferry Street Bridge Project in New Haven
Following a five-month detour, bridge has reopened to vehicle traffic as project nears completion
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) today cut the ribbon on the Ferry Street Bridge Project in New Haven. CTDOT Commissioner Joe Giulietti was joined by New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker, Transportation Committee Chairs State Senator Will Haskell and State Representative Roland Lemar, City officials, and members of the community for the ribbon cutting celebration.
“The Ferry Street Bridge needed a makeover and that’s what it got. From new steel support beams to an all-new bridge deck, this project extended the service life of the bridge and improved safety and reliability. Motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists can safely cross the bridge for many years to come,” Commissioner Giulietti said. “With more than 4,000 bridges under state control, we’re making investments in communities across Connecticut. Thank you, Governor Lamont, Senator Haskell, Representative Lemar, the state legislature and our members of Congress for the continued support of infrastructure investments in our state.”
The Ferry Street Bridge was built in 1912 and lasts underwent major rehabilitation in 1992. It connects State Street and Middletown Avenue in New Haven across the railroad track. A full detour was in place from April 2022 to today, September 30, 2022. The detour around the bridge was necessary for workers to replace the complete bridge deck.
The Ferry Street Bridge Project consisted of replacement of the existing bridge deck, repairs to the substructures, replacement of the existing bearings and steel stringers, repairs to the bridge steel truss members, milling and paving of the existing pavement and installation of new joints.
The Ferry Street Bridge Project (DOT Project No. 0092-0685) was awarded to Rotha Contracting Company, Inc., at a cost of $3,046,207.30. This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 3 in New Haven.
Members of the public are advised that this is still an active work zone. Crews will remain in the area over the next several weeks to finalize outstanding project items. Motorists are advised to use caution in work zones: slow down, keep a safe distance, and stay alert.
