CTDOT Celebrates Transit Equity Day in Honor of Rosa Parks

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will mark Transit Equity Day on Thursday, February 4th in honor of the legacy and contribution of Rosa Parks, the Civil Rights leader who challenged inequity by refusing to give up her seat on a segregated Montgomery, Alabama bus in 1955. Rosa Parks’ courageous actions resulted in her arrest, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and ultimately, the United States Supreme Court decision that declared segregation on buses unconstitutional.  

 “Public transit has proven to be a lifeline and a solution for some of the greatest challenges of our times, from the pandemic to climate change,” said CTDOT Commissioner Joe Giulietti. “Rosa Parks’ legacy on Transit Equity Day is an important call to action for continuing the work to build a more equitable and resilient transportation system.”

More than six decades after Rosa Parks’ courageous action against inequity and discrimination, CTDOT joins many from across the state and country in recognizing the unfinished work to end disparities in transportation, especially in overburdened communities most impacted by transportation emissions and pollutants.

Governor Ned Lamont recently signed a memorandum of understanding agreeing to work toward implementation of the Transportation and Climate Initiative Program (TCI-P). TCI-P is a historic multi-state collaboration to cap and reduce greenhouse gases from the transportation sector and accelerate transportation investments in an equitable, cleaner, and more resilient transportation system for Connecticut and the region.

Transit operators throughout Connecticut, including CTtransit, will be recognizing Transit Equity Day in a host of ways, including with a memorial seat reserved in honor of Rosa Parks and access to more information about the purpose of Transit Equity Day.
