I-91 / Charter Oak Bridge Construction Project Update - CTDOT Announces Ramp-Reopening Almost One-Year Ahead of Schedule

Today, the Connecticut Department of Transportation announced that the Route 5/15 southbound Exit 87 access ramp in Hartford to I-91 southbound as part of the ongoing I-91 / Charter Oak Bridge “Congestion Buster” project has reopened almost a year ahead of schedule.

The access ramp has been closed since September 2019 for large-scale construction activities associated with the I-91 / Charter Oak Bridge project, which included lowering the roadway to accommodate new height clearances for the newly constructed Bridge 1466 in Hartford, which spans over the ramp.

The ramp portion of the project was originally scheduled to reopen in September of 2021, however the Department worked with the project’s contractor, O&G/BHD JV, to accelerate construction activities to better mitigate traffic congestion and inconveniences caused by the closure.

With the full reopening of the ramp, motorists seeking I-91 southbound from Route 5/15 southbound will now be able to access it via both Exit 86 and 87 in Hartford.
