CTDOT’s State Farm Safety Patrol Surpasses 50,000 Motorists Assisted Since Program’s Inception in 2017

The CTDOT State Farm Safety Patrol – a service operated by the CTDOT and sponsored by State Farm which began in the spring of 2017 - is pleased to announce the service has officially assisted more than 50,000 motorists in need on highways throughout Connecticut.

The program works to help keep roadways and motorists safe and traffic flowing with CTDOT State Farm Safety Patrol vehicles proactively patrolling I-84, I-91, I-95, I-291, I-395, Route 2, Route 7, Route 8, and Route 15 - on the lookout for stranded motorists needing assistance, as well as any incidents including crashes, debris on roadways or any other occurrences that can impede traffic flow.

At no charge to drivers, the Safety Patrol can change flat tires, jump start vehicles, provide fuel, and even push stranded vehicles out of harm’s way and to the safety of highway shoulder areas.

“Traffic Incident management is critical in keeping highways safe and efficient and the primary mission of the CTDOT State Farm Safety Patrol in expediting the clearance-times associated with vehicle breakdowns, crashes, and even debris on roadways, plays an integral role in achieving that,” said DOT Commissioner Joe Giulietti. “50,000 assisted motorists is an amazing feat, and each one of those is a potential injury avoided, and less time stuck in traffic for everyone.”

National data has shown that for every minute a highway lane is blocked, the resulting residual traffic congestion requires 4 minutes to clear the area, and the risk for secondary crashes increases.

The CTDOT State Farm Safety Patrol was formerly known as the Connecticut Highway Assistance Motorist Patrol, or CHAMP, prior to being sponsored by State Farm. Previous funding was derived from both federal and state dollars. Since sponsoring the program, CTDOT State Farm Safety Patrol has been funded by federal dollars, with the state portion being funded exclusively by State Farm.
