CTDOT Highway Safety Office - Slow Down

The Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Office is reminding motorists to maintain safe and reasonable speeds on Connecticut highways during the current period of lower traffic volumes. Travel should be restricted essential trips only during this time of social distancing. But, if you must go out, please obey the posted speed limit.

This is especially true around highway work zones, where men and women are working right next to live traffic. As it happens, next week – the week of April 20 – is national Work Zone Safety Awareness Week. April is the traditional beginning of the outdoor construction season. At any given time between April and November, more than 100 active highway projects are underway around the state. It has been shown that motorists are more likely to be injured in a work zone than the actual workers.

Fewer car crashes also helps reduce the burden on hospitals and health care workers, giving them a greater opportunity to deal with victims of the Coronavirus pandemic, which has hit Connecticut particularly hard.

So, please, slow down!
