CTDOT Employee Recognized Nationally for Innovation - Department’s Greg Ciparelli Earns AASHTO’s Transportation Vanguard Award

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) announced that Greg Ciparelli has been awarded the prestigious Transportation Vanguard Award for 2020 by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). This is the first time a member of CTDOT has been selected among transportation leaders from across the country to receive this award, which recognizes transportation individuals with an exemplary commitment to excellence and implementation of innovative technologies.

“This is a well-deserved recognition for Greg—he understands that data and technology are powerful tools for turning information into insights, which can fundamentally change the way we do business as an agency,” said CTDOT Commissioner Joe Giulietti. “This award speaks to Greg’s leadership and also the innovation and collaboration of many dedicated members of our Department fueling more effective decision-making through technology and data analysis.”

Leading CTDOT’s new Enterprise GIS and Data Analytics Unit as a Transportation Supervising Planner, Ciparelli has been an important driving force behind the agency’s use of emerging technology platforms for data-driven decision-making. Playing a key role in DOT’s framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing data, he’s led the Department’s use of GIS (Geographic Information System) to map and catalogue the state’s transportation assets and the way they are used. Intelligence gathered through the Department’s data has been invaluable during the COVID-19 public health emergency, including insights into how the pandemic is affecting roadway and mass transit patterns, including traffic volumes/vehicle speeds and their impact on crash rates.

Ciparelli, who grew up in Ellington and now calls New Britain home, has been with the Connecticut Department of Transportation for more than 15 years.

The AASHTO Transportation Vanguard Award was established to honor a deserving individual that is 40 years old or younger for doing extraordinary things in the field of transportation. Ciparelli was selected among 29 transportation professionals put forth from state departments of transportation from across the country.
