In an effort to promote the use of masks on public transportation vehicles to reduce the spread of COVID-19, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) partnered with the state’s bus operators to distribute masks to public bus riders statewide on Tuesday, July 28th.

Masks were supplied to CTtransit and other bus transit operations throughout the state. CTtransit distributed them at the customer service and sales outlets located at 90 State House Square in Hartford, on the New Haven Green and at the lower level of the Stamford Transportation Center. Other transit operators joined the statewide effort and handed out masks to riders throughout the day.

Governor Ned Lamont and Mayor Luke Bronin joined CTDOT Commissioner Joseph Giulietti in distributing masks in downtown Hartford. Masks were handed out at about 17 transit district facilities around Connecticut.

The use of face coverings on public transportation was ordered by Governor Lamont in Executive Order No. 7BB, effective April 20, 2020. Since that time, compliance with the order on buses has been exceptional and the spread of the virus has reduced greatly. The distribution of masks at this time is being done to reduce complacency in light of our achievements as a state.

“We have seen that most riders are continuing to use masks, but with the warm summer weather there is concern that people are beginning to not be as vigilant,” said Richard Andreski, CTDOT Public Transportation Bureau Chief. “Now is not the time to take our foot off the gas. As we’ve seen in other communities throughout the country, this virus is still with us and we need to heed the order to wear masks on all public transportation. We hope the distribution of masks will help reinforce our rider’s commitment to reducing the spread of the virus.”
