Connecticut Department of Transportation Commemorates

25 Years of Shore Line East Train Service

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Shore Line East with special events during the week of June 8 through June 12, 2015.

“We are proud to celebrate twenty-five years of Shore Line East service,” said CTDOT Commissioner James Redeker. “Shore Line East is an integral part of Connecticut’s transportation network and critical to the economic well-being of our state. We want to thank our passengers for their ridership and loyalty. Without them there would be no Shore Line East.”

In order to thank Shore Line East commuters for their continued ridership and loyalty, complimentary coffee will be provided to morning commuters at the following stations, while supplies last:

Monday, June 8, 2015 – New London & New Haven State Street Station

Tuesday, June 9, 2015 – Old Saybrook & Westbrook

Wednesday, June 10, 2015 – Clinton & Madison

Thursday, June 11, 2015 – Guilford & Branford

The week-long celebration will conclude with an event on Friday, June 12, 2015 at Union Station in New Haven from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The finale will feature a live band, prizes and a locomotive shaped cake.

Shore Line East debuted on May 29, 1990, serving rail passengers between Old Saybrook and New Haven. Originally, eleven weekday trains were scheduled; five morning trains to New Haven and six evening trains to Old Saybrook. In 1996, service was expanded east to New London, and in 2002, west to Bridgeport and Stamford. Weekend and holiday service was added from New Haven to Old Saybrook in 2008 and was expanded to New London in 2013. In mid-December of last year, Shore Line East carried its 10 millionth rider and the service is now comprised of 34 weekday and 21 weekend train trips.

“Looking back, Shore Line East has come a long way to better serve the growing transportation needs of our residents,” Commissioner Redeker said. “We will continue to improve our service so that more commuters can avoid driving single-occupant vehicles and enjoy a stress-free and scenic commute along Shore Line East.”
