New, More Frequent Service Begins October 14 on the New Haven Line

Train service on weekends and weekdays get a big boost when Metro-North introduces the new fall New Haven Line train schedule beginning this Sunday, October 14, 2012. The new schedule includes 45 additional New Haven Line trains each week.

“Thirty new weekend trains will provide increased frequency during the most popular Saturday and Sunday time periods. Two new weekday morning reverse peak service will provide more travel options for customers traveling to Greenwich and Stamford in this growing market segment. Other improvements include faster travel times for Danbury branch customers and more seats for customers traveling to Stamford and Manhattan in the morning peak period,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) Commissioner James P. Redeker “Combined with more new weekday train service coming in 2013, this is the biggest service enhancement in New Haven Line history.”

Metro-North operates the New Haven Line under a service agreement with the CTDOT.

The new schedule will provide half-hourly service at many stations during the key higher-ridership times of the day on Saturdays and Sundays between New Haven and Grand Central. In addition, there will be half-hourly service during the key higher-ridership times of the day on Sunday between Stamford and Grand Central. Those “higher ridership times” are afternoons through late evening on both days, inbound and outbound.

On the Danbury Branch the current 6:51AM train will now depart Danbury at 6:48AM and will operate express from South Norwalk to Stamford, Harlem-125th Street and Grand Central to relieve overcrowding and provide a 10-minute faster ride. A new train will cover main line stops previously covered by the 6:51AM Danbury train.

There will be two new New Haven Line reverse peak trains: One departing Grand Central at 6:26AM, with stops at Harlem-125th Street, Fordham, Mount Vernon East, New Rochelle, Rye, Port Chester, Greenwich, and Stamford; and another departing Grand Central at 8:07AM, making Harlem-125th Street, Fordham, Rye, Port Chester, Greenwich, Stamford and continuing up to New Canaan, arriving at 9:25AM.  Also, the 8:07AM New Haven train will now depart Grand Central at 8:04AM and will no longer stop at Fordham, Rye, Port Chester, and Greenwich, providing those traveling to Stamford with a five-minute faster ride.

The new schedule also will provide hourly service at all New Haven Line main line stations in the weekday off-peak and weekends by adding stops to existing inbound and outbound trains between Stamford and New Haven. Rowayton, East Norwalk, Greens Farms and Southport customers will now have hourly off-peak and weekend train service.
