ConnDOT Announces Contract with First Transit, Inc., to Operate the Hartford, New Haven and Stamford Divisions of CTTRANSIT

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) is pleased to announce that it has awarded First Transit, Inc., the contract for management of the Connecticut Transit (CTTRANSIT) operations in the Hartford, New Haven and Stamford divisions.  The term of this Agreement is for five years, with a State option for a five-year extension.  This contract will be a continuation of the Department’s long professional relationship with the First Transit, Inc., firm and its local management team.

First Transit, Inc., will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Hartford, New Haven and Stamford divisions including human resources, bus maintenance, safety, training, planning, scheduling, and fare collection.  The Hartford, New Haven and Stamford divisions utilize 397 buses and 863 employees to provide 64 local bus routes, 5 flyer routes, 8 downtown shuttles and 14 express routes.  In State Fiscal Year 2006, the services offered by the 3 divisions provided over 23.3 million passenger trips.

“The Department looks forward to continuing to work with First Transit, Inc., as we make progress in building a better and more balanced public transportation system together,” said ConnDOT Commissioner Ralph J. Carpenter.

CTTRANSIT is the State-owned urban bus system, and operates a total of 8 divisions.  In addition to the Hartford, New Haven and Stamford systems operated by First Transit, Inc., other private companies operate the divisions in the Waterbury, New Britain, Bristol, Meriden and Wallingford areas under contract to the State.  These services are all under the name of CTTRANSIT and in State Fiscal Year 2006 had a combined ridership of 25.5 million passenger trips.
