Governor Rell Announces Free Holiday Train Tickets
With Purchase of Multi-Ride Tickets
Promotion Applies to Metro-North and Shore Line East Trains
To encourage the use of train service during the holiday season while gas prices remain high, Governor M. Jodi Rell announced today that the states of Connecticut and New York have joined together to issue free tickets to multi-ride ticket purchasers during the holiday season.
“This promotion will benefit everyone – commuters, tourists and anyone else traveling in Connecticut – and I encourage everyone to take advantage of it,” Governor Rell said. “Riding the train makes sense not only because it reduces congestion on our highways, but because it’s a convenient, practical and environmentally friendly way to get where you need to go.”
Anyone purchasing a December monthly ticket will receive a free 10-trip off-peak ticket. Anyone purchasing a weekly or 10-trip ticket between November 20th and December 19th will receive a free round-trip off-peak ticket.
The free, promotional tickets will be available whether the monthly, weekly or 10-trip ticket is purchased through Mail & Ride (the railroad’s ticket by mail program), on the web through Webticket or at a station through a ticket machine or at a ticket window. The free tickets can only be used on off-peak trains through January 31, 2006. They can be used by anyone for travel between any two stations. The tickets are transferable but they are not refundable.
In addition, Governor Rell announced a similar holiday program for Shore Line East commuters – the only difference is that SLE customers may use their free tickets anytime, not just during off-peak periods. All other aspects of the incentive program are identical. The SLE program is independent of the Connecticut/New York cooperative program.
