Construction to remove the former IMAX building on North Water Street, near the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, to begin February 27

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing construction work associated with removing the former IMAX building at 2 North Water St. in South Norwalk will begin Monday, February 27, 2023. Work is scheduled for daytime hours, from 7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Work should be completed in approximately eight weeks.

The removal of the building is preparation work ahead of the Norwalk River Railroad Bridge replacement, known informally as the Walk Bridge, which is anticipated to begin later this year. Removing the former IMAX building will facilitate access to the Norwalk River to construct staging platforms for the Walk Bridge Replacement Project.

DOT Project No. 301-0301-0172-021 (519-6314) was awarded to Manafort Brothers, Incorporated at the cost of $921,140 on November 11, 2022, is scheduled to be completed in late April 2023 and is administered by the Office of Construction – District 5, New Haven.

BUILDING REMOVAL INFORMATION

The former IMAX theater building, located at 2 North Water St. at the Maritime Aquarium in South Norwalk, will be deconstructed in sections with the exterior brick facing removed initially and followed by the removal of the structural steel framework. Materials will be deposited into the interior of the building as each section is carefully removed and then transported to designated material storage areas. All resident and business property access will be maintained on North Water Street.

Access to the municipal parking lot at 2 North Water St. will be maintained; however, approximately 12 parking spaces will be reduced. An alternating lane closure along North Water Street will be implemented when the contractor works on the western wall of the former IMAX building in mid-April. Pedestrian access will be closed on the east side of North Water Street and maintained on the west sidewalk for one week during this activity. There are no anticipated impacts to Norwalk River commercial or recreational marine users during the former IMAX building removal.
