Rehabilitation of the Washington Bridge carrying U.S. Route 1 Over Housatonic River in Milford and Stratford
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing that temporary deviations of the drawbridge operation regulations (33 CFR 117.207(a)) that govern the Washington Bridge carrying Route 1 over Housatonic River, in the Towns of Milford and Stratford, Connecticut, will begin on March 27, 2023.
Under this temporary deviation of the Washington Bridge operation schedule, one leaf span may remain in the closed position and the other leaf span will operate in accordance with 33 CFR 117.207(a) from November 30, 2022 to June 30, 2023 to facilitate the bridge rehabilitation project.
The U.S. Coast Guard will announce the temporary change to the bridge operating regulation in the Local Notice to Mariners and via Broadcast Notice to Mariners.
CTDOT shall notify the public by publishing notice of the temporary deviation in a newspaper of general circulation in the place where the bridge is located. CTDOT shall also notify the agency of transportation with jurisdiction and law enforcement with jurisdiction over the roadway in the area.
This announcement shall supersede the previous version posted on March 24, 2022.
DOT Project No. 0083-0267 was awarded to Mohawk Northeast Inc. at a cost of $13,595,073.75 on July 1, 2021 and was scheduled to be completed November 29, 2022. Due to work identified in addition to the original scope, the project will be extended and is anticipated to be completed in the summer of 2023. This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 3 in New Haven.
LANE CLOSURE INFO
The Contractor shall maintain U.S. Route 1 bridge operations to marine traffic at all times, restricted by single leaf closures.
Motorists can expect lane closures on U.S. Route 1 between Orchard Street and Riverside Drive. The allowable work hours for this project are as follows;
Monday - Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., and between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.;
Friday - Saturday between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m.;
Saturday - Sunday between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m.; and
Sunday - Monday between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
Future notifications will be provided to detail anticipated road closures with appropriate detours to be implemented. The Contractor shall be allowed to close U.S. Route 1 and detour vehicular and pedestrian traffic for certain stages of the project.
