Eastbound Traffic Shift on I-84 on Rochambeau Bridge

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing there will be a traffic shift on Eastbound Interstate 84 (I-84) at the Rochambeau Bridge, beginning on Sunday night, June 4, 2023. In the case of inclement weather, the traffic shift will be scheduled for the following night, Monday, June 5, 2023.

The reason for this traffic shift is to place I-84 Eastbound traffic in its permanent alignment on final pavement across the new I-84 Eastbound portion of the Rochambeau Bridge. This will take traffic off of the current Westbound crossover and enable the completion of milling, paving and line striping of the final course of asphalt on the Westbound bridge/roadway.

The shift of Westbound traffic into its permanent alignment on final pavement across the new Westbound bridge will occur sometime in July 2023.

The Rochambeau Bridge Reconstruction Project consists of replacing the Rochambeau Bridge, two bridges (Bridge Nos. 01218 & 04180) on which I-84 Eastbound and Westbound span the Housatonic River. The former bridges had extra-wide shoulders, so there has been sufficient room to place bidirectional traffic, with two lanes in each direction, on one of the bridges while the other bridge was reconstructed. Currently Eastbound and Westbound lanes are on the Westbound bridge.

CTDOT Project No. 0096-0201 was awarded to Middlesex Corporation at a cost of $52,873,000, on May 13, 2020, and is scheduled to be completed in 1,286 work days, by December 23, 2023.

This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 4, in the towns of Newtown and Southbury.
