The new signs and sign supports will be installed in accordance with the latest Federal and State standards and guidelines.  The types of signs that will be replaced along the section of Route 8 in Waterbury and Watertown include, but are not limited to, large overhead and side mounted Guide signs and smaller signs such as Exit Gore signs, Speed Limit signs, Merge signs, and Route Confirmation signs.  The types of signs that will be replaced in Bridgeport, Shelton, Derby and Naugatuck are large overhead Guide signs.

The existing signs and supports have exceeded their useful service life and are in need of replacement.  The scope of the project involves the replacement of only those signs that have exceeded their useful service life, have less than adequate retroreflectivity, have evidence of damage, or are no longer in compliance with Federal and State standards and guidelines.  Excluded from this project are signs that have been recently replaced or are scheduled to be replaced by other various construction projects.

It is the Department’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken.   It is important that the community share its concerns with us to assist in the project’s development. At this time, it is not anticipated that an informational meeting or formal public hearing will be necessary.

The design plans for the project are expected to be completed in the spring of 2022 with construction commencing in the winter of 2022.

Anyone interested in requesting information on this project may do so by contacting Barry Schilling, Project Manager, Barry.Schilling@ct.gov .  Please make reference to Project Number 0015-0381.
