Rehabilitation of Retaining Wall Along Route 1 in Groton (Mystic) to Begin

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that the project for the rehabilitation of the retaining wall along Route 1 in Groton (Mystic) will begin on August 30, 2021.

Project No. 58-335 involves the rehabilitation of the existing stone masonry wall that supports a portion of Route 1 (West Main Street) in Groton. The retaining wall constructed circa 1920, consists of mortared stone blocks topped with a metal pipe-rail anchored into a concrete cap. The wall surface has deteriorated and is missing joint mortar. The concrete cap exhibits cracking, spalling and is out of plumb. Sections of pipe railing are damaged and/or missing.

The rehabilitation consists of pressure grouting and repointing the existing stone masonry wall. The existing concrete cap and railing will be replaced. The rehabilitation will maintain the historical integrity of the wall while addressing structural and safety concerns.

A Route 1 northbound closure and detour will be implemented to facilitate construction activities for a duration not to exceed 28 consecutive days. The closure will be implemented after October 1, 2021. A detour route will be provided with necessary signing to guide vehicular traffic around the project site. A subsequent press release will be issued for notification and to detail the detour route.

Traffic may experience delays Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 A.M. Also, delays may be experienced on Saturdays and Sundays between 6:00 P.M. and 10:00 A.M.

The contract was awarded to Lawrence Brunoli Inc. of Farmington, Connecticut at a cost of $1,022,000.00 on July 27, 2021 and is scheduled to be completed in November 2021.

Motorists are urged to obey the posted speed limit.
