The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that a virtual public information meeting concerning the proposed replacement of Bridge 01120 carrying Route 74 over the Skungamaug River, in Tolland, will occur on Monday, October 18, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will be live streamed via Microsoft Teams Live Event and YouTube Live. A Question and Answer (Q&A) session will immediately follow the presentation, which will be recorded. Instructions on how to access the meeting and on how to provide comments or ask questions can be found at the project webpage: https://portal.ct.gov/DOTTolland142-152.
The live stream of the formal presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m.
The project is identified as State Project No. 0142-0152.
The purpose of the project is to address the existing bridge’s poor condition rating and functional obsolescence, to flatten the existing curve of Route 74 and widen the roadway across the bridge to improve safety for the traveling public. The project is anticipated to involve the replacement of the bridge with a simply supported prestressed concrete superstructure. It is anticipated that the proposed abutments will be supported on piles. Additionally, the project includes a full depth reconstruction of approximately 1,200 feet of Route 74 and realignment of the existing curve located west of the bridge. The wider proposed structure and flatter roadway curve will improve travel conditions for vehicles and pedestrians and will eliminate the narrow travel way conditions on the existing structure.
Temporary construction easements will be required on adjacent private property in order to perform the work. A permanent slope easement for the roadway embankment is anticipated on the north side of Route 74, east of the bridge.
Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2024 based on the availability of funding, acquisition of rights of way and approval of environmental permits. The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $6.25 million. This project is anticipated to be undertaken with 80-percent federal funds and 20 percent state funds.
