The Department of Transportation (Department) will conduct a public information meeting regarding the proposed Road Diet Project on Route 349 in Groton, on Monday, October 5, 2020. The formal presentation will begin at 6:00 PM. Refer to the project webpage for more detail: https://portal.ct.gov/DOTGroton170-3480.
The project is identified as State Project No. 0170-3480.
The purpose of the project is to discuss what a “road diet” is and how it typically involves converting an existing four-lane undivided roadway segment to a three-lane segment consisting of two through lanes and a center left-turn lane. The reduction of lanes allows the roadway cross section to be reallocated for other uses such as bike travel in roadway shoulders, transit stops or parking.
Studies show that road diet installations may reduce the overall collision rate by 19 - 47% and encourage a more community-focused “Complete Street” environment.
Right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed project are not anticipated. Construction is anticipated to begin in Fall 2020. The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $10,000. This project is anticipated to be undertaken with 100 percent state funds.
The public information meeting is being held to provide the public and local community the opportunity to offer comments or ask questions regarding the proposed project.
