Replacement of Highway Signs and Sign Supports on Interstate 91 from North Haven to Meriden and on Route 40

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (Department) is developing plans to replace signs and sign supports along Interstate 91 in North Haven, Wallingford, and Meriden, Route 40, and the associated on-ramps and off-ramps.  The new signs and sign supports will be installed in accordance with the latest federal and state standards and guidelines.  The types of signs that will be replaced include, but are not limited to, large overhead and side mounted Guide signs and smaller signs such as Exit Gore signs, Speed Limit signs, Merge signs, and Route Confirmation signs.

The existing signs have exceeded their useful service life and are in need of replacement.  The scope of the project involves the replacement of only those signs that have exceeded their useful service life, have less than adequate retroreflectivity, have evidence of damage, or are no longer in compliance with federal and state standards and guidelines.  Excluded from this project are signs that have been recently replaced or are scheduled to be replaced by other various construction projects.

To be in conformance with federal standards, mileage-based exit numbering will be included on the new signs on Route 40.  The exit numbers on Interstate 91 will not be modified at this time.
