Replacement of Bridge 01843, Route 34 over Stevenson Dam and the Housatonic River in Monroe and Oxford
The Connecticut Department of Transportation’s (Department) Office of Engineering is performing engineering activities in support of the proposed replacement of Bridge 01843, Route 34 over Stevenson Dam and the Housatonic River in the towns of Monroe and Oxford.
The engineering activities will be performed in accordance with the National and Connecticut Environmental Policy Acts to determine the most prudent design to replace the existing structurally deficient and functionally obsolete bridge.  The Department has determined that routine maintenance as well as limited scope rehabilitation projects performed on the existing structure have been ineffective at improving the condition of and maintaining the long-term viability of the bridge, therefore a complete bridge replacement is being proposed. It is anticipated that the proposed bridge cross-section will include two 12-foot travel lanes, two 8-foot shoulders, and a 5-foot sidewalk on one side of the bridge.
The present schedule indicates that the environmental document, public involvement program and design will be completed in September 2023, with construction anticipated to start in the spring of 2024, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits.  This project will be undertaken with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.
It is the Department's policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken.  It is important that the community share its concerns with the Department to assist in the project's development.  The Department will initiate a public involvement program that includes affected stakeholders and town-wide meetings during the preliminary design.
Anyone interested in receiving information on this project may do so by contacting Susan M. Libatique, Principal Engineer, at (860) 594-3179 or by e-mail at Susan.Libatique@ct.gov.  Please make reference to State Project No. 084-114.
