Replacement of Bridge 00315, U.S. Route 1 Over Noroton River in Stamford and Darien
The project consists of the replacement of Bridge 00315, which carries US Route 1 (East Main Street) over the Noroton River at the city/town line of Stamford and Darien. The construction phase will begin in January of 2019.
The proposed bridge replacement consists of a new single span superstructure composed of prestressed beams with a concrete deck on new pile supported footings and abutments. The existing profile of U.S. Route 1 will be raised approximately 2.5-feet at the bridge to meet the minimum hydraulic opening requirements.  The horizontal alignment will be similar to the existing. The proposed
bridge will feature a newly constructed roadway section consisting of four 11-foot travel lanes (two in each direction), one 11-feet left turn lane, two 5-foot shoulders, and sidewalks of varying width on each side of the roadway.
It is anticipated that construction will be performed in 4 stages. A temporary bridge will be installed to the north during Stage 1. The temporary bridge will have two 12-foot lanes and a 5-foot sidewalk to the north. During Stage 2, one lane of traffic in each direction will be supported on the temporary bridge while the existing bridge is cut and prepared to provide a third lane of traffic. During Stage 3, two lanes of eastbound traffic will be supported on the temporary bridge, and one lane of westbound traffic will be supported along the construction zone of the existing bridge while the southern portion of the new bridge is constructed. During Stage 4, the westbound lane will shift to the newly constructed portion of the new bridge while the northern portion is built. It is proposed Brookside Drive will be closed to U.S. Route 1 during all stages of construction. Residents will be redirected to Anthony Lane and Hillside Avenue during this period.

DOT Project No. 0135-0307 was awarded to New England Infrastructure of Hudson, MA on October 31, 2018, for $9,495,716.00. The project is expected to be completed on May 1, 2021.
Lane Closure and Detour Information
Traffic control personnel, signing patterns, and shifts of travel lanes will be utilized throughout the entire project in all stages to guide motorists through the work zone.
Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions and seek alternate routes.
