Public Information Meeting for Proposed Improvements along Route 172 (South Britain Road) from Main Street South to the I-84 Eastbound Ramps in Southbury
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (Department) will conduct a public informational meeting concerning the proposed improvements along Route 172 (South Britain Road) from Main Street South to the I-84 Eastbound Ramps located in Southbury, CT on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 in the Southbury Town Hall, Room 205, 501 Main Street South, Southbury, CT.  An open forum for individual discussions with Department officials will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by a formal presentation at 7:00 p.m.
The purpose of the project is to provide traffic operational and safety improvements along
Route 172 and Main Street South located off of I-84, Interchange 14 in Southbury.  The project involves the following:  1) The Route 172/Main Street South intersection will be widened to provide for a through-lane, and exclusive left- and right-turn lanes at each approach.  The existing traffic signal at this intersection will be replaced with new equipment.  2) The Westbound Off-Ramp will be realigned across from the Westbound On-Ramp, creating a single intersection with Route 172.  The Route 172 Northbound approach will provide two through-lanes and an exclusive left-turn lane.  The Southbound approach will provide one through-lane and an exclusive right-turn lane.  The Westbound Off-Ramp approach will provide separate left-and right-turn lanes.  This intersection will be signalized and designed to operate concurrently with the Route 172/Main Street South intersection.  3) The Route 172/Eastbound Ramps/Lakeside Road/Georges Hill Road intersection is proposed to be designed as a roundabout.  4) The commuter parking lot that is accessed from Main Street South will be expanded to add approximately 50 parking spaces.
Right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed project are not anticipated.
Construction is anticipated to begin in Spring 2021, based on the availability of funding.  The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $5.5 million.  This project is anticipated to be undertaken with 100% State funds.
The meeting is being held to afford a full opportunity for public participation and to allow open discussion of any views and comments the community may have concerning this proposed project.
The meeting facility is ADA accessible.  Language assistance may be requested by contacting the Department’s Language Assistance Call Line at (860) 594-2109.  Requests should be made at least five (5) business days prior to the meeting.  Persons having a hearing and/or speech disability may dial 711 for Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) and instruct the operator to contact (860) 594-2243.  Language assistance is provided at no cost to the public and efforts will be made to respond to timely requests for assistance.
