New Lane Added to Southbound Gold Star Bridge;
Bridge St. On-Ramp Reopens on May 25

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that the number of lanes across the I-95 Groton to New London Gold Star Bridge (southbound) is to be increased from 3 to 4 lanes, and the Bridge Street on-ramp is to be re-opened on Friday, May 25, 2018, in time for the Memorial Day holiday.

"We expect that adding the fourth lane across the bridge will significantly improve traffic flow across the bridge and facilitate the smooth flow of I-95 southbound traffic through the work zone," said CTDOT Commissioner James Redeker. "In addition, reopening the Bridge Street on-ramp should alleviate some of the congestion on local streets."

The project consists of repairs to the I-95 Southbound Gold Star Bridge. including structural steel repairs, concrete deck patching, joint replacement, illumination, and paving.  Construction activities began in April 2017.  Long-term lane shifts/closures will be part of the construction sequence. Additional off-peak hour lane closures may also be necessary to expedite the required repairs.

This project (No. 0094-0252) was awarded to Mohawk Northeast, Inc. of Plantsville, Connecticut, at a cost of $26 million on December 16, 2016. It is scheduled to be completed November 30, 2018.

LANE CONFIGURATION INFO:

The four I-95 SB travel lanes will remain on the south side of the bridge.  The State Route 184 (Gold Star Highway) on-ramp will begin as a dedicated lane and continue as the leftmost through lane on I-95.  The added rightmost lane will begin as a dedicated lane for the Bridge Street on-ramp and will remain as a dedicated exit lane at Exit 84 to Route 32 and Downtown New London.  The roadway pavement markings will be reconfigured to delineate 4 lanes of traffic across the bridge.  Thru-traffic will keep to the left three lanes.  The work zone will be separated from the roadway with temporary concrete barrier curb.    Additional lane closures may be implemented during off peak hours.
