The Connecticut Department of Transportation’s (Department) Office of Engineering is developing plans to improve the intersections of US 202/Route 10 at Route 20 and Route 189 in the town of Granby. The purpose of this project is to address traffic operational concerns and improve vehicular and pedestrian safety along US 202/Route 10, Route 20, and Route 189.

The project involves widening Route 10/202/189 to provide for an additional lane.  This additional operational lane will allow for double left-turn lanes resulting in reduced queue lengths and reduced vehicular delay in the center of Granby. To accommodate these double left-turn lanes an additional receiving lane will be added to Route 189 and Route 20/189.  In addition, Route 20/189 will be realigned to better establish the east-west movements as the through direction at both approaches to the intersection of Route 10/202/189 at Route 20 by reducing the heavy skew angle and providing a more defined right-turn lane onto Route 10/202/189.  To address pedestrian safety and mobility deficiencies additional crosswalks are proposed through this intersection, and additional concrete sidewalks are proposed along US 202/Route 10 south of Route 189, as well as to Route 20 east of US 202/Route 10. Finally, to better accommodate bicyclist travel within the center of Granby, all shoulders within the project limits are proposed at a minimum width of 4 feet.

The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in January 2020, with construction anticipated to start in summer 2020, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits.  This project will be undertaken with eighty percent (80%) federal funds and twenty percent (20%) state funds.

It is the Department's policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken.  It is important that the community share its concerns with the Department to assist in the project's development.  A public informational meeting will be conducted upon the completion of the preliminary design.  At this time, it is not anticipated that a formal public hearing will be necessary.
